Hattie Winston, acclaimed actor, singer, Television and Broadway veteran, has a career that spans more than five decades and yet her love of the creative experience is as fresh as it was when she first began. As Stephen Sondheim has noted “art isn’t easy” but to Ms. Winston it has brought great joy.
Starting on the lower Eastside of New York City, with the famed Negro Ensemble Company to stages around the world, she has acted on Broadway in shows such as Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Tap Dance Kid and The Me Nobody Knows. Off-Broadway she has earned Obie, Audelco and Drama-logue Awards for shows such as Ntosake Shange’s A Photograph: Lovers in Motion and Kevin Arkadie’s Up the Mountain.
Best known for her work on television she spent six seasons starring with Ted Danson on Becker, two seasons with Michael Learned on Nurse, three seasons with Cedric the Entertainer on The Soul Man and four seasons on The Electric Company, as well as, guest appearances on numerous other shows. Her film career has included The Rugrats Movie, Jackie Brown and True Crime.
The once queen of voice-overs is now the proud playwright of Nativity: A Life Story, and The Slave Narratives: A Mighty, Mighty People.” Television, movies and stage has brought her joy throughout her career, but she is most fulfilled by the act of putting words on an empty page and creating something out of nothing.” Ms. Winston is currently writing a memoir.
